L-Shaped Couch Size Guide
Updated October 20, 2026
An L-shaped sectional is the most efficient way to seat a family — and the easiest piece of furniture to get wrong. Measure the room, the walkways and the delivery route before falling for a style.
Typical dimensions
| Size | Long side | Short side |
|---|---|---|
| Apartment / small | about 75–90 in | about 55–65 in |
| Standard | about 90–110 in | about 65–85 in |
| Large | 110 in and up | 85 in and up |
Seat depth is typically around 21–25 inches; deep-seat sectionals go further and suit lounging more than upright sitting.
How to measure your room
- Measure both walls where the sectional will sit.
- Leave about 30–36 inches for main walkways and roughly 14–18 inches between the sofa and the coffee table.
- Mark the footprint on the floor with painter's tape and live with it for a day.
- Check doorways, hallways, stairs and elevators on the delivery route — modular sectionals that arrive in pieces are much easier.
Left-facing vs right-facing
The industry convention: stand facing the sofa. If the chaise or short side is on your left, it is left-arm facing (LAF); on your right, it is right-arm facing (RAF). Choose based on where the TV, window and room entrance are, so the open side faces into the room. Reversible chaises let you switch later.
Chaise vs corner sectional
- Chaise sectional: one long seat for stretching out; smaller footprint.
- True corner L: more seats, with a corner seat; better for families and guests.
Fabric
Performance fabrics and tightly woven polyester resist stains and pets; leather wipes clean but can scratch; linen looks relaxed but wrinkles. Removable, washable cushion covers are worth paying for.
